I just got back from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's good, definately not what you might expect, and even a little creepy. There are lots of little in-jokes for those who pay attention. It was still missing a scene or two that I would have really liked to see (perhaps they'll be on the DVD?). The Oompa Loompa songs are very close to the poems in the original book, though some of them have obviously been edited down (if you remember the book, the moralistic poems were extremely long).

That's as much as I have time for, without giving out any spoilers. Now I'm off to Virginia, to see my mother get (re)married.

The terminally stupid, be they customers or family, deserve at LEAST a sound beating (I keep a riding crop on hand just in case the opportunity arises).

Wonka is really really creepy, though they attempt to explain it with flashbacks.

I didn't like the flashbacks too much, I didn't think they added to the movie in any way. And really, I found Gene Wilder to be way creepier in the first one. In this one, Depp came off kinda fruity and not sinister.

To me, Gene Wilder's (and the book's) Willy Wonka always struck me as being something other than human. They might have been evil, but they didn't really come across as creepy to me.

Depp's Wonka seems very human to me, and that adds to his creepiness in my mind. Maybe that's because the things "normal" people do to one another often end up being more horrific than anything I could have dreamed in my nightmares.
